Steward
be entrusted with
leave no Trace principles
throw anything on the ground
trash on the ground
designated path 指定通路
don't ride anything on the signs with a Sharpie
uh Park Rangers
you uh be marking up signs
fence posts
whatever
this goes without saying but uh make
you dig a proper cat hole
you go poop
I just say poop and make sure that you bury
your toilet paper completely or better yet why don't you carry it out to the next Trail town the next time you are able to uh dispose of all your trash
nobody wants to see toilet paper blooms on the side of the trail
make sure that you stay on the
trample down vegetation
way off the trail next take care of camping spots
when you uh come to the end of the day
and you find a good camping spot uh nine
times out of ten somebody else has
already stayed there and hopefully they
left it in pristine condition uh for you
when you got there and so why don't you
make sure that you stay in established
campsites if you have to go and and uh
stay in a camps spot that is not
established then make sure that you do
not leave any trace and you try to make
uh try to be uh is less intrusive as you
can if you build a fire make sure that
you use the existing fire ring and to be
honest with you uh you don't really need
to build a fire anywhere I hike the
whole Pacific Crest Trail in 2020 and I
never one time built a fire now again
it's in California in Oregon Washington
and uh but it's been so dry out here
that even though most of the wildfires
are started by lightning strikes and not
by campers but I'd hate to think that I
burned I was responsible for burning
down half the forest or half the uh A
for a forest to come back after it's
been burned down and so again I'd hate
people not being able to enjoy
what I'm able to enjoy right now on the
trail on the subject of building fires
uh don't go around cutting tree limbs
down or cutting trees down uh
just just grab some dead Limbs and stuff
like that from off the ground and uh
again let other people be able to enjoy
uh nature and uh don't be cutting things
down make sure that when you camp that
you camp I think two at least 200 feet
from any kind of water source one good
principle that I learned is that when
you leave a campsite make it look like
that no one's ever been there
another way that you can be a good
Steward of the trail is to take care of
other hikers on the trail
when you pass somebody on the trail make
sure that you speak to them just say Hi
how are you how you doing
but speak to them be friendly if you see
a fellow hiker that needs help stop and
help him out it's not going to take you
very long to help them out sometimes
newbies will be on the trail and uh they
may want to to hike with you and maybe
glean a little bit of your
Trail knowledge next take care of the
some people uh just love to go on
Facebook or Instagram or whatever and
just gripe about things on the trail and
uh maybe Trail towns or Trail Angels or
whatever and make sure that you protect
the reputation of the trail other people
are looking for a trail to hike and if
they hear nothing but bad news about
that trail then they're not going to
want to hike it there were several
sections on the Pacific Crest Trail that
hadn't been maintained in years
but I wasn't gonna uh go on my YouTube
channel or Facebook or whatever a media
and in bad mouth it uh you know those
Trail uh maintenance people uh they work
hard many of them are volunteers I heard
post things on social media about the
trail a griping about it oh there's so
many blowdowns in this section so many
all the trees were burned I had to Ford
and so on and so on well welcome to life
why can't it all be downhill
oh my goodness it must have took us
several hours to get over this uh pass
just a brutal brutal climb today
I need to practice when I preach
take care of the reputation of the trail
next thing take care of the trail towns
now what I mean by that is people
with the hikers that come into Trail
and so if you act like a jerk in in the
trail towns they're going to think that
everybody that does the PCT or the at or
the CDT CDT they'll think that everybody
is a jerk and you'll you'll mess it up
if you're hiking into a trail town uh
don't flip people off when they don't
stop and give you a ride again people
will associate uh you with the trail
that you're on now when someone does
stop and give you a ride into town be
overly appreciative of them they didn't
have to stop and pick you up and by the
nobody wants to smell a stinky hiker I
get in their car so apologize uh when
you get in there but be overly friendly
talk to them while uh if they want to
talk uh but they're most of them are
interested in the trail and interested
in what you've been doing so again don't
be a jerk and uh and just sit there a
real stoic uh talk to them and uh again
tell them how great a time you're having
and by all means uh when they bring you
your destination in that trail town I
offer them some money now most of them
won't take it every time that uh they
took me to the destination I did offer
to give them money and uh some of them I
did give them money now uh talking about
a trail Angels because most of them uh
live in the trail towns that you're
visiting but uh be nice to Trail Angels
again uh they're just doing that out of
the kindness of their heart don't act
like an entitled hiker at this recording
it's been two years since I've hiked the
and I still stay in contact in contact
with some of the trail Angels who helped
me out tremendously uh either getting
into town or one couple allowed me to
stay in their backyard in my tent and
cook for me for a couple of nights and
and for breakfast and so I owe it to
them to be nice and uh just remember the
kindness that they provided for me while
I was on the trail I was at
you know I I was desperate I needed
something and they provided it for me so
again don't act like an entitled hiker
Trail Angels Angels owe you something
they don't owe us anything
now when you go into a trail town and
perhaps maybe you go to a restaurant or
something like that tip the waiter or
waitress uh tip them real good again
they're going to form an opinion of the
trail based on what you do if you get a
motel room or stay in a hostel out in
trail Town don't leave it a mess when
you leave make sure that you put the
towels all in one place on the floor and
I'm not saying you have to make up the
bed and all that kind of stuff but don't
leave it a big mess with garbage
just don't do that again take care of
the trail towns because other people are
going to want to come in and use the
facilities that you used if you go to a
grocery store or something of
convenience store or whatever to do a
resupply if you can take a shower before
you go you don't want to be walking down
the aisle of a grocery store and cause
everybody to faint or Keel over when you
walk past them with your hiker trash
think and so if you can you know go to
the motel room take a shower uh laundry
and and then do your resupply and then
lastly uh take care of the abusers of
just beat the fire out of them I'm just
man although I've wanted to at times
but you don't have to act all
self-righteous and holier than thou when
you see somebody uh violating the leave
no Trace principles but you can just
very uh kindly tell them hey I I notice
uh you dropped this trash and uh you
know if you're not going to pick it up
I'll pick it up but it'd be better if
you did you know just something real
kind of again you don't have to stand on
your soapbox and preach to them uh but
just remind them that the trail is not
it was given to us and we needed to take
care of it and so if you come across an
abuser of the trail you might want to
very kindly just remind them of that now
hiking on public Trails since my boys
were 9 and 11 years of age
and now the oldest one's uh 41 and my
youngest son is 30 39 40 something like
that but I am so glad that the same
trails that we hiked on several years
ago that I'm just now bringing my
grandkids on those Trails so again
the trails are not ours we're a steward
of them and so we need to take care of
them as best as we can if you like this
video and you think it'd be a help uh to
someone else be sure and give it a
thumbs up and share it and if you've not
subscribed to my channel yet then please
be sure and do that as well and until
then I will see you down the trail
if humans have to bury their poop how
come horses and dogs don't
